SUMMARY

The United States Institute of Peace is looking for a part-time lead editor. The lead editor is responsible for managing the flow of report and book manuscripts and other content from receipt to final publication. This person must have excellent editing skills and possess sound judgment in problem-solving while coordinating and managing a myriad of editorial activities. This individual must also have excellent editing skills, with expertise in using the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook. This individual should have mastery of MS Office and a strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop. Excellent communication skills are a must, as this position will be working directly with an in-house publications team. Background in international affairs or peace studies is highly preferred. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages publications workflow

  • Facilitates efficient functioning of the Institute’s publications by monitoring flow of manuscripts and other content from receipt to final publication, inventories, submission to acceptance and acceptance to publication turnaround times, and other editorial deadlines 
  • Responsible for enforcement of content submission guidelines and editorial schedules while maintaining the highest quality standards 

Oversees editorial schedules and a team of freelance editors and proofreaders

  • Assign work to and supervise development editors, copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers 
  • Supervise editorial schedules and advise on production schedules 
Ensures editorial quality for all publications
  • Approve final copy before printing and dissemination 
  • Ensure all work is delivered on time and within budget and that USIP publications meet the highest standards for editorial quality 
  • Prepare editorial and production reports for USIP programs and leadership 

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of six years of editing experience is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience required.
  • Must have project management experience.
  • Must have superb interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet aggressive deadlines, and an enthusiasm for working effectively with other staff members in varying roles and in different departments
  • Mastery of MS Office and Acrobat Professional. 
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, database administration (including Quickbase), and content management systems (including Firebrand) preferred. 
     

This position is subject to the availability of funds. The initial term of the position will be determined subject to the availability of secured funding, and is eligible for renewals based on continued funding.

All USIP contract and employee positions are contingent upon the favorable completion of a suitability background investigation.

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
